2008 Ma'afa Awareness Week
These pictures are from our 2008 Ma'afa Awareness Week which ran from December 1, 2008 through
December 4, 2008. December 1 was also World AIDS day which included a panel discussion hosted by SUNO's School of Social Work about AIDS effect on communities of color in New Orleans. The CAAAS ended the week with a Kwanzaa Potluck and we were overwhelmed by the great amount of food and fun! Huge thanks to the School of Social Work, The College of Education, Leonard S. Washington Memorial Library, Student Development Center, Institutional Effectiveness, and Student Affairs.
2008 Global Women's Forum
This event was spearheaded by Dr. Lora Helvie-Mason, Assistant Professor of Speech Communications, and the Center's own Melonee Griggs. Panelists included Dr. Sudipta Das, Associate Professor of History and Dr. Xiongya Gao, Associate Professor of English. The program was a part of 2008 Women's History Month programming at SUNO.
2008 Black History Month
Our 2008 Black History Month Celebration started out with the phenomenal Amiri Baraka and the up and coming Molefi Asante Jr. Other pictures are from our Closing Ceremony which included an African fashion show presented by Mrs. Josephine Okoronkwo (in blue), Director of the Student Development Center. Music was provided by the Rebirth Brass Band. Our theme for the Closing Ceremony was "A Night Under the Baobab".
2007 Ma'afa Awareness Week
This was the Center's first ever Ma'afa observance. Ma'afa is Swahili for "holocaust", "great tragedy", or "great injustice" and is a term that refers to the journey African slaves endured during the Transatlantic slave trade. The events for our first ever Ma'afa Week focused on learning about the triumphs of African Americans.
